Monitor Reddit

Reddit is where people ask strangers what to buy, and where they say what went wrong afterwards. It is the highest-intent source in social listening and the one every tool in the category starts with.

[01] WHAT FISHOUT COLLECTS/ REDDIT

What gets collected

Posts and comments across public subreddits, with the subreddit name and the author’s public handle attached.

And the conversation around it

A Reddit comment is often meaningless alone. FishOut links a matched comment to the post it answers when that post is in your project too, because one of your keywords matched it, so “same, we moved off them last month” reads under the question it answers.

Who is on Reddit

Founders in r/smallbusiness and r/SaaS, engineers in r/devops and r/selfhosted, buyers in r/sales and r/marketing, and a long tail of subreddits for every category. If your buyers ask each other for recommendations anywhere, it is here.

Worth knowing

Reddit is strict about self-promotion, and the accounts that get banned are the ones that post automatically from a pool. FishOut drafts a reply and stops — you send it from your own account, disclosing who you are.
[02] WHAT YOU FIND THERE/ TRIAGED

Real Reddit mentions, as FishOut reads them

Every post is read against your project's Brief: a relevance from 0 to 100 with Why chips saying what drove it, and labels such as Asking for recommendations or Complaint. Posts below the threshold go to Filtered with a reason and never count toward your plan. The examples here are illustrative.
r/smallbusiness96

Two of us, 400 emails a day, and I am the bottleneck. What I actually want is something that reads them and tells me which fifteen.

Asking for recommendations
r/sales93

Notchmail just raised our renewal by 60% with two weeks notice. Nine seats. Actively looking now.

[03] WHAT TO TRACK/ KEYWORDS

Keyword shapes that work on Reddit

The same three keywords do not work everywhere. What finds buyers on Reddit is different from what finds them on Reddit or in the trade press, and getting this wrong is the most common reason a listening tool goes unread.

Your product name, plus the subreddits it lives in

Reddit's value is the subreddit attached to every match. Track your name broadly, then filter the inbox by source — r/smallbusiness reads very differently from r/programming, and the same phrase means different things in each.

"looking for" + your category

The highest-intent phrasing on Reddit is someone describing a problem, not naming a product. “Looking for a shared inbox that” finds people who have never heard of you, which your brand keyword never will.

Competitor name + “alternative” or “vs”

Reddit is where the switching conversation happens in public. A competitor keyword with a Complaint label or negative sentiment is exactly what the built-in Switchers view collects.

What to watch Reddit for

The keyword shapes, relevance floors and routing differ by what you are looking for, so each of these is its own setup rather than a filter on this page.
