Monitor GitHub

For a developer tool, GitHub is where the bug reports are — often in someone else’s repository, where nobody on your team is watching.

[01] WHAT FISHOUT COLLECTS/ GITHUB

What gets collected

Issues and pull requests whose title or body matches, with the repository name attached.

And the conversation around it

An issue or pull request arrives with its repository, so you can see at a glance whether it is your project, a competitor’s, or an integration.

Who is on GitHub

Your users, and your competitors’ users. The valuable mentions are usually in repositories you do not own: someone filing an issue against a library that integrates with you, or comparing two tools in a pull request.

Worth knowing

GitHub rewards a technical answer and punishes a marketing one. This is the platform where the reply register matters most — FishOut drafts in a technical register here and still never posts for you.
[02] WHAT YOU FIND THERE/ TRIAGED

Real GitHub mentions, as FishOut reads them

Every post is read against your project's Brief: a relevance from 0 to 100 with Why chips saying what drove it, and labels such as Asking for recommendations or Complaint. Posts below the threshold go to Filtered with a reason and never count toward your plan. The examples here are illustrative.

Webhook signature verification fails on payloads over 64KB. Under 64KB it matches every time. Happy to send a failing payload privately.

[03] WHAT TO TRACK/ KEYWORDS

Keyword shapes that work on GitHub

The same three keywords do not work everywhere. What finds buyers on GitHub is different from what finds them on Reddit or in the trade press, and getting this wrong is the most common reason a listening tool goes unread.

Your repository and package names

Including the ones people type wrong. An issue filed against your SDK in someone else's repo is invisible to you otherwise.

Your product name inside issue bodies

The valuable GitHub mention is usually an issue in a third-party repo — “does this work with AcmeMail?” — not one on your own tracker, which you already watch.

Competitor package names

Migration issues and “how do I move off X” threads are buyer intent in a technical register, and they are answerable with a code sample.

What to watch GitHub for

The keyword shapes, relevance floors and routing differ by what you are looking for, so each of these is its own setup rather than a filter on this page.
