Mentions as a push to your phone, via ntfy

ntfy turns a URL into a phone notification, with no account needed on ntfy.sh and nothing at all if you host it yourself. It is the lightest way to have the posts worth answering find you, and the one destination where FishOut sets the priority for you.

Every alert channel is on every plan, including Free. ntfy.sh’s free tier allows 250 messages a day.

[02] CONNECT IT/ SETUP

Point FishOut at a topic

3 steps, a few minutes end to end.
  1. 1

Pick a topic nobody will guess

On ntfy.sh, topic names are public: anyone who guesses yours can read it. Use a long random name, or a protected topic on your own server. Subscribe to it in the ntfy app on your phone.

  2. 2

For a protected topic, add ?auth=

ntfy accepts credentials as an auth query parameter (base64, no padding). It is the only query parameter FishOut allows on an ntfy URL, and FishOut keeps it when it publishes to your server’s root.

  3. 3

Paste it into FishOut and set a high floor

Under Settings → Notifications, add an ntfy channel. A push is the most expensive interruption you have: 90 is a good start, and batching (on by default) turns a burst into one push.

Then set the floor

ntfy is for the posts you would get up for. A floor of 90 means a Reply now post — someone asking for exactly what you sell, still fresh — arrives at high priority with a long vibration, and almost nothing else arrives at all. Keep everything between 70 and 90 in a chat channel where it can wait for morning.

[03] WHAT IS IN IT/ FIELDS

What ntfy receives, field by field

Built from the event’s envelope and nothing else, so a retry renders exactly the message the first attempt would have.
Field How
TitleClippedThe headline, clipped at 120 characters, prefixed 🐟 by the fish tag.
MessageShownPost title, then the facts line, the hint and the labels, as plain text.
PriorityShown4 (high) when the Reply call is Reply now; 3 (default) otherwise.
Tap and actionsShownTapping opens the mention in FishOut; two view actions: Open in FishOut, View on Reddit.
Post bodyNeverNever sent: the envelope does not carry it.
[04] TEN PINGS OR ONE/ DIGEST

A burst arrives as one message

ntfy batches by default. Here 3 posts were held after the first; they arrive together when the window closes, best first.

[05] WHAT WILL BITE YOU/ LIMITS

ntfy’s limits, not ours

These are ntfy’s constraints, checked against the ntfy documentation and pricing. Failures are tracked per channel, so one broken destination never stops the others.

Priority runs from 1 (min) to 5 (max/urgent). At 4, high, Android gives a long vibration burst and a pop-over notification — which is what a Reply now post gets. [source]

A notification can carry up to three actions. FishOut uses two: Open in FishOut and View on the platform. [source]

Topic names on ntfy.sh are public, so a guessable name is a readable feed of your mentions. Pick something long and random, or use access control. [source]

ntfy.sh’s free tier allows 250 messages a day, with a request bucket of 60 refilled one every five seconds. Paid tiers start at 2,500 a day; self-hosting has whatever limits you set. [source]

A message over 4,096 bytes is turned into an attachment. A FishOut push is a few hundred bytes. [source]
