Monitor Google News for competitor mentions

Funding, acquisitions, launches and coverage — the competitive context that turns up on a sales call, ideally before the prospect mentions it.

[01] THE JOB/ COMPETITOR MENTIONS

What competitor mentions means

Watching what is said about the tools you sell against — launches, price changes, outages, and the people leaving them.

What it looks like on Google News

Google News gives you the institutional half of competitive intelligence: a competitor raising money, being acquired, announcing a product, or being written about. None of it is a buying signal and all of it is context. The specific value is not being surprised — hearing about a rival’s funding round for the first time from a prospect on a call is a bad moment, and it is entirely avoidable. The other problem is syndication: a single announcement gets republished across dozens of outlets, and read as a stream of alerts one event looks like a wave.

What Google News will not give you

News is where a common-word brand name does the most damage. The example below is a plant-hire firm that shares a name with the product being tracked; it reads as relevance 8, lands in Filtered with the reason Different meaning, and never counts toward your allowance.

[02] WHAT TO TRACK/ KEYWORDS

Keyword shapes for competitor mentions on Google News

A keyword tuned for this job on another platform is usually silent here, because the same person writes differently in each place. The example beneath is read the way FishOut reads one: a relevance bar and the label it would carry.

competitor company names

The whole job. Funding, acquisition, leadership changes and product announcements all arrive under the company name.

competitor plus funding language

"raises", "Series A", "acquired". Narrower and higher signal if the bare name produces too much syndicated repetition.

category plus market language

Analyst pieces and market round-ups that name several players. Useful for knowing how the category is being framed.

[03] HOW TO SET IT UP/ VIEWS & ROUTING

The configuration that works here

Save a view for it — competitor keywords on Google News — and read it once a week rather than sending it to a live channel. Almost nothing here needs a response today, and treating it as urgent is how a competitive channel starts getting ignored. The Daily brief’s Spikes flag the day a competitor’s name suddenly appears everywhere; everything else can wait for the weekly read.

And what to do with what arrives

The Switchers view collects it — competitor keyword, labelled Complaint or negative sentiment. An agent you write can post it to a competitive Slack channel with a draft, and into whatever your team uses to keep track of what rivals are doing.
[04] THE COMMON MISTAKE/ AVOID THIS

Routing it to a live channel

Nothing on Google News needs a response today, and a syndicated announcement arrives twenty times. Put that in Slack and you have taught the team to ignore a competitive channel within a week. This belongs in a saved view, read once a week — which is also the only format in which the pattern across a quarter is visible.
