Google Alerts vs F5Bot

Both are free and both are good, and the honest answer is that they are not really alternatives. Google Alerts watches Google’s index for news, blogs and web pages; F5Bot watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters directly. They cover different halves of the internet, and running both costs nothing.

Google Alerts against F5Bot

Every figure read from each vendor's own materials on 20 October 2026. A tick marks the column with the advantage on that row; plenty of rows have neither, which is usually the honest answer. [02] WHERE GOOGLE ALERTS WINS/ HONESTLY

Reach no paid tool matches, for nothing

It queries Google’s own index across 240 regions and 47 languages. No monitoring vendor has crawled a fraction of that, and it costs nothing and takes a minute to set up.

It sees news and blogs, which F5Bot does not

Coverage in a trade publication, a competitor’s blog post, a review site — none of that is on Reddit or Hacker News, and none of it reaches F5Bot at any price.

No limits, no setup, no contract

No documented cap on alert count, no seats, no quota, no trial clock. As a baseline safety net it is genuinely unbeatable.
[03] WHERE F5BOT WINS/ HONESTLY

It reads the platforms directly

F5Bot watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters submissions and comments at the source. Google Alerts only ever sees what Google indexed — X blocks realtime search from crawlers, and Reddit reaches Google through a licensing arrangement rather than an open crawl.

Delivery you can rely on

Alerts arrive within two hours free, five minutes at $9.99, and instantly from $49.99. Google Alerts delivery is best-effort with no history to inspect, and Google’s own troubleshooting page suggests checking your spam folder.

Precise keyword control

Filtering flags, common-word handling and grouping on paid tiers. Google Alerts offers a binary choice between only the best results and all results, and no way to see why something matched.
[04] HOW TO CHOOSE/ SHORTCUTS

You want to watch press and web coverage

Google Alerts

It is the product for exactly this, it is free, and F5Bot does not cover news or blogs at all.

You want to catch Reddit and Hacker News threads

F5Bot

It reads them directly rather than waiting for Google to index them, and it catches comments as well as posts.

You are not sure which you need

Both

They are free and they cover different halves. Run them for a fortnight and see which one surfaces things you act on.

Your alerts have stopped arriving

F5Bot

Silent delivery failure is Google Alerts’ known weakness, and there is no delivery history to diagnose it with.

[05] A THIRD OPTION/ OURS, DISCLOSED

Where FishOut changes the answer — and where it does not

The shared limitation is that both end at an alert, and neither ranks anything — a passing joke and someone actively shopping arrive looking identical, and at volume that becomes a filter rule. FishOut’s free plan covers the same two main forums, plus Bluesky, GitHub and Google News, with a real inbox, delivery history you can inspect, the API and an MCP server; $19 adds YouTube, Medium, LinkedIn, TikTok and X. If you are watching one name occasionally, though, these two together are free and genuinely adequate, and we would rather say so.

Great video. Does anything in this list handle Gmail and Outlook accounts in the same inbox? That is our whole problem.

AcmeMail does Gmail and Outlook side by side in one inbox — I work on it, so I am biased, but that exact mix is the most common setup we see.
