Octolens vs Syften

Both are aimed at developer tools and they sit at opposite ends of the same idea. Octolens scores and tags what it finds and charges $199 a month for it; Syften reaches more places and leaves the judgement to the filters you write, from $29.95. If you have somebody who enjoys writing boolean, Syften is remarkable value. If you do not, that person is what Octolens is replacing.

Octolens against Syften

Every figure read from each vendor's own materials on 20 October 2026. A tick marks the column with the advantage on that row; plenty of rows have neither, which is usually the honest answer. Pricing in this category moves — three of the ten tools we track repriced during 2026 — so confirm anything you are about to sign for.

[02] WHERE OCTOLENS WINS/ HONESTLY

It ranks what it finds

AI relevance and tagging on every plan, so the output is a sorted queue rather than a stream. Syften’s AI is a binary keep-or-drop against a rule you write, and it starts a tier up.

LinkedIn, which Syften does not have at all

Not gated, not an add-on — Syften’s own FAQ says it does not monitor LinkedIn. For a B2B developer tool selling to engineering leaders rather than engineers, that can decide this outright.

Unlimited seats and a full API on every plan

No per-seat cost, and the API, webhooks and MCP server are included from Pro. Syften has no seats either, but puts webhooks and MCP behind its $119.95 tier.
[03] WHERE SYFTEN WINS/ HONESTLY

Sources genuinely nobody else has

Podcasts, public Slack communities, Indie Hackers, Mastodon and Product Hunt, among about twenty. Octolens reaches podcasts and newsletters only on its $599 Scale plan, and reaches no public Slack at all.

A sixth of the entry price

$29.95 against $199. Even Syften’s PRO plan at $119.95 — with every source, unlimited archive, webhooks and MCP — undercuts Octolens Pro.

Boolean filters that do what you tell them

Precise, inspectable, and no model deciding what you meant. If someone on the team enjoys this, the results are better than any scoring, and they never drift.
[04] HOW TO CHOOSE/ SHORTCUTS

You need LinkedIn

Octolens

Syften does not offer it on any tier or as an add-on. This is the shortest decision on the page.

Nobody wants to maintain boolean queries

Octolens

Filters degrade quietly when the person who wrote them moves on. Scoring fails more gracefully.

You want podcasts or public Slack

Syften

Octolens reaches podcasts only at $599 and public Slack not at all. This is Syften’s genuine moat.

Budget is the constraint

Syften

Its top tier costs less than Octolens’s entry tier. Read the filter counts before assuming $29.95 covers your watch list, though.

[05] A THIRD OPTION/ OURS, DISCLOSED

Where FishOut changes the answer — and where it does not

The gap between these two is judgement against sources, and it is possible to want the first without paying $199. FishOut reads every post for relevance, labels and a Reply call on every plan, Free included, with the API, webhooks and MCP server throughout; $19 adds LinkedIn, TikTok and X, and agents you write — one that sends posts labelled Has a problem to engineering, say, and another that assigns leads. We do not reach podcasts or public Slack, so if those are producing mentions you act on, Syften remains the answer regardless of price.
[06] SEE IT ON YOUR KEYWORDS/ FREE PLAN

What you get instead of Octolens or Syften

This is the free plan. Instead of a feed of matches, a list sorted by who is asking — and unlike Octolens or Syften, alerts go to whichever of thirteen places your team reads.

At five people the thing that breaks is two of you answering the same email. Look for assignment and collision warnings before anything else. Disclosure: I build AcmeMail, which does both.
