Connect FishOut to Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent, from Nous Research, reads MCP servers from its config file and signs in with OAuth — including a device flow for the VPS it often runs on. It also has a scheduler that can name an MCP server, which makes "check my mentions every morning" a one-liner.

Setup steps checked against Hermes Agent's own documentation on 20 October 2026.

Add FishOut to Hermes Agent

https://mcp.fishout.ai/mcp, on every plan.
1

Add FishOut to config.yaml

Hermes reads MCP servers from ~/.hermes/config.yaml under mcp_servers. Edit the file — hermes mcp add is documented only for presets.

~/.hermes/config.yaml

mcp_servers:
  fishout:
    url: "https://mcp.fishout.ai/mcp"
    auth: oauth
2

Sign in — in a fresh terminal

Run the login outside a running session: auto-reload inside one gives up after 30 seconds, which is too short to finish an OAuth sign-in. Hermes identifies itself with a client metadata document, which FishOut supports, so nothing needs registering.

bash

hermes mcp login fishout
3

On a headless server, use the device flow

With no browser on the machine, the device flow gives you a code to enter on your laptop instead. Set oauth.flow: device on the server to make it the default.

bash

hermes mcp login fishout --flow device

Check it worked. Start a session and ask Hermes what the fishout server can do; it should list the tools you included. A 400 or 405 on initialize means the URL is wrong or the client fell back to SSE.

[02] WORTH KNOWING FIRST/ LIMITS

Before it bites

Stated before you hit them.

If both tools.include and tools.exclude are set, include wins. Use one.

If a sign-in fails with a redirect error, set oauth.redirect_host: localhost — some setups reject 127.0.0.1 redirect URIs.

Already on Claude Code? hermes import-agent claude-code copies your MCP servers into mcp_servers — but never credentials, so run hermes mcp login fishout afterwards.

Not tested by us yet. These steps follow Hermes Agent’s own documentation, read on 20 October 2026.

A tighter tool set. tools.include takes names or globs. This keeps an always-on agent to reading, and turns off prompts and resources it does not need.

~/.hermes/config.yaml

mcp_servers:
  fishout:
    url: "https://mcp.fishout.ai/mcp"
    auth: oauth
    tools:
      include: ["list_*", "get_*", "count_mentions"]
      prompts: false
      resources: false

Second outage this quarter, what are people moving to?

Yes — six in the Switchers view since yesterday. The HN thread asks outright what to move to and has no vendor replies. The r/sysadmin post is venting rather than shopping; watch it.

[04] WATCH ANY PLATFORM/ SAME SERVER
[05] ON A SCHEDULE/ HERMES AGENT

Hermes Agent’s scheduler

Hermes has a scheduler, and a job can name the MCP servers it needs — the run fails its preflight if FishOut never connected, rather than answering without it. Each job runs in a fresh session.

bash

hermes cron create "daily at 7am" \
"List Reply now mentions from FishOut and send me the top three"

Or let FishOut keep the clock

Alerts and the Daily brief run on FishOut’s side, with no agent involved, and agent rules act on every mention as it is triaged. The scheduled job then only has to do the judging.
