What is a custom connector in Claude?

Anthropic’s name for a remote MCP server you add yourself, as opposed to the ones in its directory. FishOut is not in the directory yet, so it goes in as a custom connector.

Does it work in the Claude mobile app?

Yes, once it is added. Connectors you add on claude.ai or Claude Desktop appear on iOS and Android at your next sign-in. Adding one from mobile is in beta.

Can I use it on the Claude free plan?

Yes. Custom connectors are available on Free, limited to one at a time. The FishOut server itself is on every FishOut plan, including Free.

Do I need an API key?

No. You sign in to FishOut and Claude never sees a key. Claude does offer request headers for servers without OAuth; FishOut has OAuth, so leave them empty.

How do I revoke Claude’s access?

In FishOut, open Settings → API & MCP and disconnect Claude; it stops working immediately. Removing someone from a project also removes their assistant’s access to it, because every call is checked against current membership.

Connect FishOut to Claude as a custom connector

Claude calls remote MCP servers "custom connectors". You add one on the web or in the desktop app, paste a URL and sign in to FishOut; the same connector then follows you to Claude on your phone. The connection is made from Anthropic’s servers, not from your laptop.

Add FishOut to Claude

Open Connectors

On claude.ai or in Claude Desktop, go to Customize → Connectors, choose + Add and then Add custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it first under Organization settings → Connectors (Add → Custom → Web), and members then choose Connect.

Paste the server URL

Name it FishOut and paste the remote MCP server URL. Claude reads FishOut’s metadata and shows the sign-in settings it detected.

Keep Claude’s published identity and sign in

Leave the OAuth client on “Use Claude’s published identity (Recommended)” — there is nothing to register by hand. Sign in to FishOut, pick the organization and projects Claude may reach, and approve. Read-only is a sensible default for a chat client on a shared machine.

Use it anywhere you use Claude

Turn the connector on in a chat from the Search and tools menu. Connectors added on the web or desktop appear in the iOS and Android apps at your next sign-in.

Check it worked. Start a new chat and ask "what can the FishOut connector do?" — Claude lists the tools it can see. If it lists nothing, the connector is off in Search and tools, or the sign-in was not finished.

[02] WORTH KNOWING FIRST/ LIMITS

Before it bites

Stated before you hit them.

Claude connects from Anthropic’s cloud, not your device, on every surface. FishOut is a public endpoint, so this matters only if you meant to put it behind a VPN.

Free Claude accounts can have one custom connector. Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise have no such cap.

Adding connectors on mobile is in beta; web and desktop remain the main path. Using one on mobile works once it is added.

A connector cannot be edited. To change its sign-in or the projects it reaches, remove it, disconnect Claude under Settings → API & MCP in FishOut, and add it again.

Team and Enterprise owners can set each tool to Always allow, Needs approval or Blocked for everyone. Blocking the destructive tools is a reasonable organisation-wide default.
