What is generative engine optimisation (GEO)?

Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the practice of trying to influence how AI assistants and AI-powered search describe a brand — by shaping the sources those systems read, rather than by ranking in a conventional list of blue links.

[01] THE LONGER ANSWER/ EMERGING

Why generative engine optimisation (geo) matters

The premise is straightforward: if a growing share of buyers ask an assistant "what should I use for X" instead of typing it into a search box, then being well described in whatever that assistant reads matters as much as ranking used to. The premise is probably right. Almost everything built on top of it is contested — nobody outside the model providers can see the retrieval, the training data or the ranking, so most GEO advice is inference from outputs, and most GEO measurement is a sample of prompts rather than a measurement of anything.
[02] HOW IT WORKS/ IN PRACTICE

The inputs are ordinary sources

Assistants that browse read the same public web everyone else does — documentation, comparison pages, forum threads, review sites. The practical implication is unglamorous: being accurately described in the places that get quoted is the work, and it looks a lot like content and PR.

Community threads carry disproportionate weight

A Reddit thread answering "best tool for X" is exactly the shape of text an assistant reaches for. This is the one place where GEO and social listening genuinely overlap: the conversations you can monitor are among the sources being read.

Measurement is sampling, not observation

The tools selling GEO measurement ask a model the same set of questions repeatedly and count how often you appear. That is a survey of a non-deterministic system, not a measurement of a ranking. It is not worthless, but it is not what an analytics number is.

Nothing about it is stable

Model versions change, retrieval changes, and providers do not publish either. A tactic that appeared to work last quarter may simply have coincided with a model update.
[03] WHAT IT IS NOT/ CONFUSED WITH

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) against the terms it gets mixed up with

Most of the confusion in this category is vocabulary rather than substance. These are the terms generative engine optimisation (geo) is most often used interchangeably with, and the difference that actually matters in each case.

SEO

SEO targets a ranked list of links against a query. GEO targets a synthesised answer with no ranking and no stable position. The overlap is large — both come down to being accurately described in sources that get read — but the feedback loop in GEO is far weaker.

Social listening

Listening tells you what people said about you, in posts you can read and reply to. GEO is about what a model says about you, which nobody can read directly. They touch where community threads are both a mention and a source.

AI visibility monitoring

That is the measurement product sold alongside GEO — repeatedly prompting models and counting brand appearances. It is a sampling method, and worth judging as one.

[04] WHERE IT MISLEADS/ THE CAVEAT

What a definition will not tell you

This is the least settled term on this page and the one where confident advice should make you suspicious. Nobody outside the model providers can observe why an assistant named one tool and not another, so causal claims about what moved a mention are inference. The defensible version of GEO is the boring one: make sure the public record about you is accurate, complete and present in the places that get quoted. That is worth doing regardless of whether the acronym survives.

What FishOut does about it

FishOut does not measure what an AI says about your brand, and we are not going to add a number we cannot stand behind. What it does is monitor the human conversations that AI systems read — the Reddit threads, the Hacker News comments, the comparison posts — so you can answer them while they are live. That is the part of this you can actually act on.
